Curtain Walling General Principals

The main function of the curtain walling in consideration of the structural loads of the building concentrated on the frame of the internal walls are as follows:
  • To withstand wind, rain, snow, sunlight, heat cold, atmospheric pollution, fungus, and insects.
  • To prevent access by intruders and entry or retention of moistures.
  • To prevent damage by fire and injury to occupants.
  • To control heat transmission, sound and air movements.
monarch1The performance of the curtain walling should meet the requirements of the site and climate as the primary means of control of the internal environment. Mass and thickness are desirable for high standards of sound insulation and thermal stability. The majority of this function can be fulfilled by a lightweight wall. This reduction in weight and thickness are accompanied by a saving in structure and increased in the total floor area. Reduction in the size of structural members by as much as 20 percent and a saving of 15cm in the wall thickness of the 10 storey building are possible due to the lighter construction, although careful design is necessary if the gain is to be realized.
Thinness and lightness in weight bring real advantages, particularly rapid erection, accuracy and guaranteed performance. Manufacture and fabrication are carried out in the factory. Factory production ensures the degree of precision not attainable on site. Rapid erection of curtain walling protects the interior against the weather and allows finishing works and other service installations to be carried out to give earlier occupancy.

As the curtain walling is not required to support floor loads, it is possible to use materials, which
are engineered to meet the performance required of the system and to bear the necessary
loads.    

The function of the curtain walls can be performed by assemblies of aluminum, plastic (PVC-U), synthetic rubber, glass and a variety of pane materials.
